“A Plant a Day till Spring” will highlight one plant a day, starting on the winter solstice (December 21, 2013)… And ending on the vernal equinox (March 20, 2014)… If all goes to plan I will be starting with old Snowdrop photos from 2013… And ending with new photos of Snowdrops in 2014…
I don’t have a whole lot to say about this plant… Growing up my mother planted them every year… She still does… So it has a special place in my heart…
Seeding is simple… Broadcast over prepared soil… Keep the ground wet… Germination should occur in under two weeks… I only recommend quality seeds when Zinnias are concerned… The cheap ones all have very low germination rates… And the few that do survive will not exactly be “show worthy” specimens… Often being extremely susceptible to insects and disease…
Dead-heading is the key to keeping these plants flowering… It should be done as soon as the flower starts to fade… This forces the plant to continue trying to reproduce…
That’s it for today… I am getting ready to go on a mission to acquire cuttings from some local Serviceberry trees… Also grabbing a bunch of “Red Twig” Dogwood cuttings… Spring is just a stones throw away…

Zinnia is one of my favourite guerrilla flowers for its habit to bloom even in october.
