A Plant A Day Till Spring – Day 31 – Passionflower

“A Plant a Day till Spring” will highlight one plant a day, starting on the winter solstice (December 21, 2013)… And ending on the vernal equinox (March 20, 2014)… If all goes to plan I will be starting with old Snowdrop photos from 2013… And ending with new photos of Snowdrops in 2014…

Monday morning in paradise… Well… It is 30 degrees… And I’m sitting here with my coffee looking at one of my Passiflora attempting to flower… Under outdoor conditions this plant would be in full bloom… But given the low-level of light we receive in the winter these tropical plants tend to go dormant for most of the winter…

When they are outdoors I treat them as I do any of my houseplants… The only difference is these plants grows around 20′ when I move them outside… This isn’t as big of a deal as it sounds… When autumn arrives I simply cut them back to the pot… And move them indoors for the winter…

During the winter months I do not feed my Passionflowers… A few weeks before I move them outdoors I will give them a 50/50 dilute mix of a Nitrogen based fertilizer… But that is the only prep they need… Remember to leave Passionflowers (and all houseplants for that matter) in the shade for a few days before putting them into full sun…

During the Summer these plants can devour fertilizer… Don’t be afraid to go a little heavy on the fertilizer… NOT NITROGEN BASED… Nitrogen will make this plant grow very fast… I recommend a “bloom boosting” fertilizer that is high in Potassium and Phosphorus… This will ensure a plethora of blooms throughout the entire Summer…

Passionfruit tend to go nuts here. We have problematic banana passionfruit as one of our “weeds”. The parrots snip off the flowers and do a fair bit of work controlling them but this year has been a bumper year for them and they are everywhere.
