Blueberry Sunrise – Last to Remain

BlueberrySoer2

“Blueberry Sunrise – Chasing Dew” – Soergel Orchards – Wexford, PA

We will all be free to roam among the trees…
Together in the garden to pick blueberries…
A flower doesn’t open until the sun is just right…
Even in the darkness we should try to see the light…

I am one with the darkness but strive to find the light…
I want to be the warm glow you seek in the night…
Pain requires energy to physically self sustain…
Those who know to let it go will be the last to remain…

Red Currant – Pick the Berries

RedCurrant

“Red Currant” – Garden Dreams – Wilkinsburg, PA

If you don’t pick the berries… The birds will surely get them…
What makes a cherry last is to harvest with the whole stem…
A Red Currant is slowly swaying in the steady winds…
An Apple is forbidden fruit… Forbidden like our sins…

A crying mourning dove signals from the power lines above…
Set against the cloudless blue sky… Summer scents of love…
The wind blows through the leaves and over the swaying trees…
If the flowers had wings they would visit the honey bees…

Red rust compliments the decaying copper green…
Straight corn-stalks supports the climbing green beans…
Bee balm flowering against a cloudless sky of blue…
A perfect night dreaming with the company of you…

Hanging in There – Metamorphosis

comment

“Hanging in There” – Keystone State Park – Westmoreland County, PA

Hanging in there… That’s how I have felt for the past five years… Not good… Not great… Just hanging in there… Every day the same… Weeds… I pulled so many weeds in fact… That I felt like a weed… A weed in a beautiful garden… A weed waiting to be pulled from the earth…

After many years of self employment… I have taken a job working on a local farm/orchard/garden center for a family I already know and love… Soergel Orchards in Wexford, PA is my new home… It is my new school… The thought of the learning possibilities on this farm makes my brain tingle… The fresh inspiration makes my pen drool… My camera… Myself… My well-being… As far as my heroes are concerned… This family is only below my own…

I am a caterpillar… But soon… I will be a butterfly…

Where the Sidewalk Meets the Road – The Earth Bleeds Orange

SidewalkRoad

“Where the Sidewalk Meets the Road” – Mulberry Street – Wilkinsburg, PA – Acid Mine Drainage discharging from the buried foundation of a now demolished building…

Western Pennsylvania shows the scars of one-hundred years of industry… Some are obvious… Abandoned steel mills… Communities left in ruins… Others are not so obvious…

Coal mining was a massive industry in this state… A direct result of a lack of environmental restrictions within the commonwealth was a lack of remediation obligations after the venture was completed… Spent mines were filled with the byproducts of coal processing… Iron pyrite happened to make up a large percentage of this waste… When the abandoned mines eventually flooded… The water mixed with the iron and rusted… Add oxygen and you now have sulphuric acid…

Sulphuric acid… Bleeding from the earth… Where the land will allow it is often hidden by the very people we expect to protect us… But in urban areas where land is at a premium… There is no hiding it… And sadly… There is no money to remediate it… It just continuously flows out of the ground and down the street side… Eventually running through a small hole drilled in the side of the storm sewer… And right down into Nine Mile Run… Which flows into the Monongahela River… Which becomes the Ohio River… And then the Mississippi River… And ultimately the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean…

Among the many colors the earth bleeds… One of the most destructive… And also the most common… Happens to be orange…

Field of Gold – The Fog will Follow

InAField

“Field of Gold” – Keystone State Park – Westmoreland County, PA – A collaboration with nature…

Sitting in a flowering meadow… Myself and the swallows…
When this wind stops blowing the evening fog follows…
Sunset… Magic in nature… Magic in our short little lives…
Like these tiny swallows our energy rises and dives…

Water droplets from the relentless rains… Clinging to the trees…
A warblers song suddenly brings me to my knees…
Persistent decrescendo… Thunder rolling in the distance…
Between sunshine I imagine cooperative coexistence…

Existence with nature is simpler than existence with each other…
It’s easy to hug a tree but impossible to hug your brother…
Community is common unity… Unity is a social experiment…
The idea we can all get along is somewhat of an embarrassment…

We all have best friends… And we will all make enemies…
Value both… Learning experience taken from the centuries…
Unconditional love is thicker than water… Like a raging flood…
After the clouds comes the sun… Then the rain becomes mud…

In the Dark – Stay Outside and Play

Ramp

“In the Dark” – Whitney Avenue – Wilkinsburg, PA

I am but a tiny being on this massive rock… I am a rock…
I am but an observant soul… Lost… Looking for a way to be found…
Looking for a way to ask for something I can’t define…
Looking for that elusive sign… Looking for myself…
Searching through the darkness…
Realizing I am of the darkness…

All is well… Everything is just peachy…
My lie of a smile denies you the real me…
Blue skies combined with yellow clouds in gray…
Evenings approach ushers in another orange day…
Another day of labor… Another day in the heat…
Another day I didn’t wave the white flag of defeat…

Ninebark

“Ninebark at Night” – Whitney Avenue – Wilkinsburg, PA

I am a fighter… I am on the outside one-percent…
And I have no desire to come inside…
I have no desires because my addictions took them away…
Fingerprint ID and the mug shot to display…
That is why I garden… That is why I plant seeds…
That is why I consider you when figuring for my needs…

I am not equal to anyone… I am six-feet below you…
I am staring up at the ground looking for a new view…
Looking for a way to erase these horrid memories…
Looking for a way to find peace with my enemies…
Looking for a way to find peace with myself…
With my memories… With my past… With you…

Composition in Scraps – Primary

Comp2b

“Composition in Scraps – Primary” – Bricks from my garden… River stones from the alley… Dandelions and Buttercups… Blue Flag Iris… Bamboo… Red Twig Dogwood… Apple…

A collaboration of a few of the things I find beautiful… Mere scraps to most… But to me… To me these things all posses as much individual beauty as they do as one composition… They were collected for a reason… They were collected to define a season… They were collected to define me…
