A Plant A Day Till Spring – Day 28 – Osteospermum

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

“A Plant a Day till Spring” will highlight one plant a day, starting on the winter solstice (December 21, 2013)… And ending on the vernal equinox (March 20, 2014)… If all goes to plan I will be starting with old Snowdrop photos from 2013… And ending with new photos of Snowdrops in 2014…

Last Summer was the first time I ever attempted to grow Osteospermum… Mine liked full-sun and dry soil… I typically fertilize 3-4 times a year… This plant received no special treatment… It actually bloomed well beyond the first frost right on up until the first freeze… I did notice this plant stresses out easily early on in its life… When the stress level reaches a certain point the plant will stop flowering… It takes a couple of weeks for it to resume flowering…

Yesterdays mission was a complete success… Cuttings taken… Prepared… And planted… As a bonus I found $5 on the sidewalk… I’m getting bored with the “look” of this site… It may be time for a change… Anyway… I’m trying to focus on poetry today… I have started a bunch… But completion seems to elude me…

A lot of people wish they were happy…
Everybody wants to be free…
I often choose to pretend…
I am someone other than me…

Close my eyes and drift away…
… …

New To writing and never had to cite sources before… These “Plant a Day Till Spring” posts are simply intended to kill time until spring when I start writing more… My source is Wikipedia.org… The photography is all my own… And I am adding my own information… But much of this is just related from the web…

A Plant A Day Till Spring – Day 3 – Hellebores

“A Plant a Day till Spring” will highlight one plant a day, starting on the winter solstice (December 21, 2013)… And ending on the vernal equinox (March 20, 2014)… If all goes to plan I will be starting with old Snowdrop photos from 2013… And ending with new photos of Snowdrops in 2014…

There are around 20 species of Helleborus… They are herbaceous or evergreen perennial flowering plants in the family Ranunculaceae… Many species are poisonous… Despite common names such as “Christmas Rose” and “Lenten Rose”… Hellebores are not closely related to the rose family…

Hellebores are particularly valued by gardeners for their winter and early spring-flowering period… These plants are surprisingly frost resistant… Many are in fact evergreen… I have been playing with different varieties for the past six years… After all this time I have yet to experience a killing freeze…

Hellebores has a lethal reputation… “Black Hellebore” was at one time used to treat insanity… Black Hellebore is also highly toxic causing a multitude of symptoms that culminates in death… My best advice is to keep this plant away from children…

Propagation is really not necessary as this plant is a self-seeder… Hellebores often expands in a circle with the new plants growing to the outside… All one has to do is carefully dig out the new seedlings in late spring… The entire clump can also be dug up and divided…

I tend to watch my clumps of Hellebores throughout the winter as they will often start bud formation well in advance of actually blooming… Hellebores is a very low-maintenance plant that once established will flourish without human intervention… Even in the most inhospitable environments…

Ashes to Ashes – In God I Trust

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

“Ashes to Ashes” – Frick Park – Pittsburgh, PA – Summer 2013

Set out across the winter landscape…
Among the skeletons of sleeping trees…
Gracefully striding in leaps and bounds…
Silent night among the sleepy sounds…

Steady mind for the journey ahead…
Better things to do than lay in bed…
The evening shadows creep and crawl…
Occasional bursts of white snowfall…

Grace the path to promised lands…
Take a breath and raise your hands…
Heaven is the land in front of our eyes…
Expect the unexpected occasional surprise…

To creep on up when you think your down…
Raindrop flood and we eventually drown…
These same drops make my garden grow…
Combine with sun to get a full rainbow…

“Dust to Dust” – Tennis Way – Wilkinsburg, PA – Fall 2013

Another week back to the steady grind…
Take a day off and see what you find…
Works not meant to consume our life…
Shouldn’t be the object of constant strife…

The days get shorter than the night is long…
A lack of birds means a lack of song…
Too many clothes to feel the cold air…
Not enough sunlight to really even care…

Waiting for spring so my gardens grow…
Flowers bloom and sunshine flows…
With our hands we draw and render…
Garden dreams and paradise splendor…

Heaven is a garden on physical land…
Sown in our minds but created by hand…
Ashes to ashes and dust to dust…
God and nature are the only things I trust…
