Red Currant – Pick the Berries

RedCurrant

“Red Currant” – Garden Dreams – Wilkinsburg, PA

If you don’t pick the berries… The birds will surely get them…
What makes a cherry last is to harvest with the whole stem…
A Red Currant is slowly swaying in the steady winds…
An Apple is forbidden fruit… Forbidden like our sins…

A crying mourning dove signals from the power lines above…
Set against the cloudless blue sky… Summer scents of love…
The wind blows through the leaves and over the swaying trees…
If the flowers had wings they would visit the honey bees…

Red rust compliments the decaying copper green…
Straight corn-stalks supports the climbing green beans…
Bee balm flowering against a cloudless sky of blue…
A perfect night dreaming with the company of you…

A Plant A Day Till Spring – Day 23 – Currant

Currant

“Inside the Currant Bush” – Spring 2013 – Garden Dreams Urban Farm and Nursery – Holland Avenue – Wilkinsburg, PA

“A Plant a Day till Spring” will highlight one plant a day, starting on the winter solstice (December 21, 2013)… And ending on the vernal equinox (March 20, 2014)… If all goes to plan I will be starting with old Snowdrop photos from 2013… And ending with new photos of Snowdrops in 2014…

Seven Days of Fruit and Berries

The genus Ribes includes the edible currants “blackcurrant”, “redcurrant”, “whitecurrant”, “gooseberry”, and several other hybrid varieties… The genus also includes the group of ornamental plants collectively known as the flowering currants…

There are restrictions on growing some Ribes species in some U.S. states… Not including Pennsylvania… YET… As they are a host for White Pine Blister Rust…

Propagation is ridiculously easy using ground staples… Or anything you can use to pin a branch to the ground… Bricks work surprisingly well… This is done in the fall after the leaves are gone… Leave it till spring… New “vertical” growth means it has rooted… This is known as layering…

Getting cuttings to root is also possible… I personally have more luck with hardwood cuttings… I take them in the spring before the buds appear… Root formation happens around mid-summer… The plant will be ready for the earth the following spring…

Garden Prayer #4 – Always Seek the Beautiful

FLoatDandy

“Floating in Blue” – April 2013 – Wilkinsburg, PA – Dandelions floating in a dyed puddle…

Little bird sitting on a naked branch… Winter feathers puffed up and proud… Working for the right to live… Singing for the seeds I give… Singing for the sheltered trees… Crying in the frigid breeze…

Awake before the rising sun… Early risers we are one… Light the candle see your eyes… In the glow our spirits fly… Evening energy differs from day… Mornings we work and evenings we play…

Always seek the beautiful… Always take the scenic route… Take the path to stellar dreams… Believe in Jack and magic beans… Have faith in your hands and you will find… Nature cooperates with piece of mind…

Plants bloom and water flows… Birds sing and vegetables grow… A healthy garden grows a healthy you… Thinking like this will change your view…

I wanted to take a second and mention that I am in the process of writing a book… As of right now the title is “A Green Thumbed Vagabond”… But knowing me… That is subject to change… Any way… I’ll keep everyone updated as the project progresses…
