A Plant A Day Till Spring – Day 11 – Trout Lily

“Trout Lily” – Spring 2013 – Frick Park – Pittsburgh, PA

“A Plant a Day till Spring” will highlight one plant a day, starting on the winter solstice (December 21, 2013)… And ending on the vernal equinox (March 20, 2014)… If all goes to plan I will be starting with old Snowdrop photos from 2013… And ending with new photos of Snowdrops in 2014…

Seven Days of Spring Wildflowers

I am super excited for this next one… One of the first wildflowers I was introduced too… One of the first wildflowers to bloom in the spring… Erythronium americanum… Better known by the common name “Trout Lily”… But also known as “Yellow Trout Lily”, “Yellow Dogtooth Violet”, and “Adders Tongue”… It is a herbaceous flowering perennial in the family Liliaceae… Trout Lilies grow in colonies that can be ~300 years old…

The common name is a reference to the appearance of its gray-green leaves mottled with brown or gray… The best way I can describe it is similar in pattern to a Brook Trout… It blooms in early Spring with nodding flowers… Each plant sends up a single flower stem with a pair of leaves… Trout Lily is a spring ephemeral whose foliage disappears by late spring as the plant goes dormant…

In the garden this is a full shade plant… It can be grown from seed… Although it is difficult… It is possible… But the plant won’t flower for at least 4 years… Planting corms is probably the most effective way of propagation… Get them from a source you trust… They won’t be cheap… Plant them 3” deep and leave them alone… They will colonize quickly and continue to spread for a long time…

NATIVE PLANTS DO NOT TRANSPLANT WELL AND SHOULD BE LEFT IN THE WILD… It takes a great deal of experience to transplant from the wild… 99% of the time your transplants will be dead before you even get back in your car… Please don’t dig wildflowers…

Sorry for the lack of other posts… I promise I will get back on schedule after the New Year… As always thank you for reading… And…
