Heaven and the Horizon

Soergels1

“Heavenly Horizon” – Soergel Orchards – Wexford, PA – Apple tree skeletons against the blue horizon…

It’s a beautiful day to be outside among the clouds so white…
Take me to the valley depths and show me to the light…
The space between horizons is colored in sapphire blue…
Midnight stars of Orion shine while holding hands with you…

Stellar dreams of splendid queens and lands so rich and green…
Climb the mountains made of dreams to air that’s pure and clean…
Every night we drift to sleep with good thoughts on our minds…
In the morning chase the sheep and look for hidden signs…

A moment with my merry band among the trees so grand…
Floating off to splendid lands to find the tallest stand…
Stop for moments relaxing on the highest mountaintop..
Heaven is like the freshest air surrounding dew drops…

Waterfalls and robins calls floating through the morning fog…
In the distance under resistance cries a panicked dog…
When I write poems my tattered soul floats right up to the sky…
When I write my dreams my awakening soul will open up and fly…

Composition in Scraps – Composing Me

EarthDay

“Composition in Scraps” – Whitney Avenue – Wilkinsburg, PA – As the name implies… Scraps from a day at work… It was either this or the garbage can… Almost a self-portrait in a way…

Put me in a group of people… And I crumble…
I stutter… Shake… And ultimately stumble…
Nature is my saving grace… My constant drive…
Put me in the forest and watch me come alive…

Know where I’m going… I’m just not sure how to start…
Looking for my salvation in the form of natural art…
Stop for a moment below a twisted mulberry tree…
Every part of which can heal… From root to canopy…

Shattered glass outlines brick like shiny gemstones…
Naked trees against the sky resemble broken bones…
Moments in time always shape our inner perception…
Shadows in our lives lead to shadows in our reception…

Towering grey clouds rise from the distant horizon…
Thunder rumbles as the afternoon humidity rises…
Towering Maple trees sway as the steady breeze blows…
As this moment progresses my tattered spirit grows…

Right here… Right now… I am among the poorest…
The most I have to offer is some pictures of the forest…
Sitting here watching the sun rise over rotten homes…
Sitting here watching the sunrise… While my soul roams…

I never know where my mind will take me… I never know what I will find… But as long as I slow down and pay attention to the world around me… I always find something beautiful… I always find something grand…

Someday… I will find you…

Underneath the Snow

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

“Snow Showers” – Whitney Avenue – Wilkinsburg, PA

Underneath the snow lies cold and frozen ground… Soon the robins will sing their early spring song… The tulips will stretch with the crocus blossoms… The sun will cry tears through the cloudy bottom… Because… Spring is almost here… Pleasant weather is near… Prepare our gardens for a bountiful year… Life’s daily delivery in the morning dew… If you grow your own you essentially grow you… The dew in your garden is the dew in mine… When my garden is healthy you’ll know I am fine… You’ll know that I am whole… When I’m working on my garden I’m working on my soul… The water you put on your garden… Is my future rain… To share your seeds… Is to share your gain… To plant a tree… Is to share the air… To plant a garden… Is to show you care…

A Plant A Day Till Spring – Day 1 – Snowdrops

GalanthusCU

“Galanthus Close Up” – Spring 2013 – Whitney Avenue – Wilkinsburg, PA

Today is the winter solstice… Today marks the beginning of Winter… To celebrate the occasion… I am dropping the first post of what I hope becomes an annual series… Each post will be devoted to keeping the cold winter days warm through daily doses of the garden… Now… I don’t know about you… But I get pretty depressed during the cold winter months… One of the few things that gets me through this time of year is dreaming of the flowers of spring… This year I have decided to share those dreams with the rest of you…

“A Plant a Day till Spring” will highlight one plant a day, starting on the winter solstice (December 21, 2013)… And ending on the vernal equinox (March 20, 2014)… If all goes to plan I will be starting with old Snowdrop photos from 2013… And ending with new photos of Snowdrops in 2014… This year winter is 89 days… So technically… I only have 88 more posts to go…

I am not planning a standard format with these posts other than featuring one plant each day… These posts will be in addition to whatever else I post… And could include anything from permaculture information to original poetry… The intentions of this series is to share the warmth… And share some knowledge…

Galanthus

“Naturalized Galanthus” – Spring 2013 – Whitney Avenue – Wilkinsburg, PA

Galanthus… Meaning “Milk Flower” – AKA Snowdrop… Fllower in winter before the vernal equinox… All Species are perennial, herbaceous plants that grow from bulbs… Each bulb produces two or three leaves and an erect, leafless scape, which supports a single flower. The seeds produced by this plant have a small fleshy tail containing substances attractive to ants which distribute the seeds…

Snowdrops naturalize easily… The bulbs will self propagate in the garden… This can be easily facilitated using a propagation technique known as twin-scaling, which is really nothing more than slicing bulbs up into smaller pieces… New bulbs will form in profusion on the exposed parts… This is basically a last ditch effort to survive… I accidentally found this method after slicing through a clump of Snowdrops in my own garden… I left a bunch of the split bulbs on the surface and much to my surprise they started growing hundreds of new bulbs… A quick Google search later and I had found twin-scaling…

Annually I look forward to the neighborhood Snowdrops… I speculate some of the patches are at least fifty years old given the age of many of the houses… The patch shown in the photo above is behind a hundred year old Victorian home on my street…

I look forward to this patch of snowdrops more than any other flowers around… The energy that is associated with it spans generations… And as I spread them around the neighborhood… My energy grows as well…

Garden Prayer #4 – Always Seek the Beautiful

FLoatDandy

“Floating in Blue” – April 2013 – Wilkinsburg, PA – Dandelions floating in a dyed puddle…

Little bird sitting on a naked branch… Winter feathers puffed up and proud… Working for the right to live… Singing for the seeds I give… Singing for the sheltered trees… Crying in the frigid breeze…

Awake before the rising sun… Early risers we are one… Light the candle see your eyes… In the glow our spirits fly… Evening energy differs from day… Mornings we work and evenings we play…

Always seek the beautiful… Always take the scenic route… Take the path to stellar dreams… Believe in Jack and magic beans… Have faith in your hands and you will find… Nature cooperates with piece of mind…

Plants bloom and water flows… Birds sing and vegetables grow… A healthy garden grows a healthy you… Thinking like this will change your view…

I wanted to take a second and mention that I am in the process of writing a book… As of right now the title is “A Green Thumbed Vagabond”… But knowing me… That is subject to change… Any way… I’ll keep everyone updated as the project progresses…
